New Self Catering independent walking Holidays

We are delighted to announce the introduction of a range of new walking holidays using self catering rental accommodation. They are designed to offer independent walking and activity based holidays to those people who are looking for maximum flexibility. We will supply customers with information about the area as well as suggested walks. It's then upto you to decide how much walking you wish to do. Our self catering walking holiday pages detail each holiday page by region. For the moment we have walking holidays in the Beaujolais, Tarn in south west France and the Vanoise in the French Alps. Some regions have more than one rental property on offer. These are detailed in the "Accommodation and price" tab.

We have selected some of the best and (sometimes unusual) historic properties (villas, chalets, cottages etc) set in beautiful regions where great walks, activities and sight seeing is all close by. We also offer some good value properties for those looking for a budget walking holiday.

New Article about being prepared for your independent walking trip

We have added a new article to our recently added section called top-tips. This will be the first of three articles about staying safe in the mountains or remote locations. It looks at how you should prepare yourself before you set off for your walk. The others will look at preparing your rucksack and what to do in an emergency.
This advice applies equally to people venturing out for the weekend in UK mountains as it does to mountainous or remote regions abroad. It also applies to our independent walking holidays in mountainous regions such as our trekking tour in the Queyras and our self-guided holiday in the Vanoise region of the French Alps.

New Top tips for Walking Trips

High Point Holidays is pleased to announce the addition of a new section to its website. Called Top-tips, the section forms part of our commitment to adding useful information for our customers to our site.

Overtime we'll be adding a range of articles designed to keep you safe and happy whilst walking or cycling in the great outdoors. Some advice will be specific to certain activities, such as independent walking, or visiting certain destinations such as Morocco, whilst others will be more general.

We will update you when new articles are added to this part of the site by providing a short summary on this news page as well as on our Facebook page. At the moment we have two articles, one on how to protect yourself against the sun, the on how to keep going when the walking gets tough.

The founder of High Point Holidays, Tony Armstrong, has recently been diagnosed for the second time with myeloma, an incurable blood cell cancer that affects the bone marrow. A keen hill walker, Tony credits his quick recovery, after he was first diagnosed in 1996 and treated with a stem cell transplant, to regular exercise - he scaled the 15 peaks in Wales in a single weekend. Now, he wants to help improve treatment and fund research into a cure for the 4,000 people diagnosed annually with the disease in the UK.

Tony's philosophy is to offer unusual holidays at affordable prices. As an antidote to the well-worn routes on offer through other operators, High Point Holidays specialises in finding forgotten trails and tracks rather than following the crowds. Customers can choose between guided tours and independent treks everywhere from the unspoilt wilderness of the Vanoise National Park in the French Alps to the majestic Picos de Europa mountains in the north of Spain.

And, after a long day in the saddle or on their feet, customers can look forward to staying in an independent guest house full of character - rather than an identikit hotel. Whether in an old farm, a former mill, a quaint cottage or a chateau, accommodation has been carefully chosen to guarantee an authentic local experience, home-cooked meals and a warm welcome.

For those who prefer to go it alone, High Point Holidays can recommend tried and tested routes off the main tourist trails, complete with detailed maps and comprehensive notes about the walk and the region. Both Tony and William are experienced walkers, cyclists and golfers. Tony is based at our registered office in Shaftesbury among the rolling hills of Dorset, whilst William, our principal walking leader and local representative, is based in the Beaujolais region of France.
